Kidney disease will affect 1 in 3 cats and 1 in 10 dogs at some point in their life. Chronic kidney disease is the most common condition diagnosed in a senior cat. However, this disease is usually not discovered until 75% of the kidney function is gone, because the symptoms can be very mild.

Some of the more common symptoms to watch for include:

  • Increased drinking and urination

  • Decreased appetite

  • Lethargy

  • Weight loss

With cats, many of these signs will not appear until later in the disease, which is why it seems like kidney disease can appear overnight when the degenerative changes have been occurring over years.

So what can you do to prevent this from happening?

We can use nutrition and supplements to help support the kidneys and even treat kidney disease if there has already been damage. Using whole foods and biologically appropriate proteins will help support kidney health. Numerous natural remedies can be used to increase blood flow to the kidneys, reduce bacterial infections and help maintain normal blood pressure.

Preventative care is key for diagnosing this quiet disease. Make sure that you take your dogs and cats into the veterinarian at least once a year and are getting routine wellness bloodwork done. This will help identify any changes. However, the kidney values, BUN and creatinine, don't become elevated until 75% of function is gone. You want to make sure you are asking for an SDMA test, which is more sensitive for determining if kidney function is declining.
