If you’re tired of watching your pet tremble, hide, or panic every time a firework goes off, you’ve likely been told to "just manage the anxiety." But here is the truth I share in the video above: Fireworks aren't the problem.
Fireworks are simply a stress-test.
If your pet struggles with noise, it’s a sign that their nervous system, gut health, or mineral levels are already out of balance. You don't need more "calming chews" to mask the symptoms—you need a foundation that allows your pet to handle stress without falling apart.
In this post, I’m breaking down the Layered Support Framework I use to help pets move from reactive to resilient.
If you've ever watched your dog pace, pant, shake, or hide when fireworks start, you know how helpless it can feel.
Like many pet parents, you may have found yourself searching for the "best" calming supplement or hoping this year will somehow be different.
But here's what years of working with dogs and cats—and caring for my own pets—has taught me:
Fireworks don't create anxiety. They reveal it.
They reveal how resilient your pet's nervous system is before the stress ever begins.
That's why I don't think this is really a fireworks conversation.
It's a resilience conversation.
The goal isn't simply getting through one stressful evening.
The goal is helping your pet build the foundation to handle life's challenges with greater confidence and recovery.
In the video above, I walk you through the exact framework I use with my own pets. Below is a simple guide you can follow to start preparing today.
When our pets show signs of anxiety—whether it’s trembling during thunderstorms, barking excessively when left alone, or hiding from guests—it’s easy to think the problem is “just behavioral.” But anxiety in pets is far more than a training issue. It’s deeply rooted in the body’s physiology, particularly the stress response system.
At the core of this system is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This triad regulates how your pet responds to stress and plays a crucial role in both acute and chronic anxiety symptoms.
Here’s how it works:
The hypothalamus (a brain region) first detects the threat and sends a signal to the pituitary gland.
The pituitary gland then signals the adrenal glands to release cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone.
Cortisol prepares the body to respond—but when the threat is ongoing or unresolved, cortisol levels remain elevated, leading to a cascade of health effects.
Prolonged HPA axis activation can:
Deplete calming minerals like magnesium and calcium
Disrupt digestion and immunity
Sensitize the nervous system to future stressors
Alter gut health and microbiome balance
Increase reactivity and reduce emotional resilience
Another key player is the neurotransmitter glutamate, which acts like a gas pedal in the brain. It stimulates the HPA axis but, when left unchecked, can lead to an overactive stress response. This is where pets can become stuck in “high alert mode,” reacting to even mild stimuli with fear or hyperactivity.
At the same time, the endocannabinoid system (ECS)—an internal system designed to maintain balance—steps in to try and regulate things. The ECS helps calm the fear response, extinguish traumatic memory loops, and reduce inflammation that contributes to chronic anxiety. When supported properly (through nutrition, herbs, or supplements like hemp oil), the ECS can be a powerful ally in restoring emotional balance.
What does this mean for healing?
It tells us that true anxiety relief in pets requires a multimodal approach. We must support the gut-brain axis, stabilize the HPA response, nourish neurotransmitter pathways, and reduce systemic inflammation—all while helping our pets feel emotionally safe.
Did you know that your pet’s gut produces over 90% of their serotonin? A healthy microbiome supports:
When we restore gut health in dogs and cats, we often see behavior and anxiety improve dramatically. That’s why gut health is a core pillar of my Better Gut Health Blueprint.

Many pets are great at hiding it. A simple at-home stool test can reveal if your pet's cortisol levels (stress hormones) are elevated—so you can take action early.
We recommend the In-Home Stress Test by Innovative Pet Lab. It’s non-invasive, easy to use, and helps you understand how stress may be affecting your pet’s behavior, digestion, or immune health.

You can’t build a house during a hurricane. If you want your pet to stay calm during the next round of fireworks, you have to start building their foundation now. Here is how to layer your support:
Your pet's surroundings matter just as much as anything you give them.
Before the fireworks begin:
โ Create a quiet room or safe hiding space
โ Close blinds to reduce flashes of light
โ Turn on calming music, white noise, or a fan
โ Keep your evening routine as normal as possible
โ Allow your pet to choose where they feel safest
The biggest mistake I see is waiting until your pet is already panicking.
Prepare their environment before the first boom.
A fulfilled nervous system handles stress much better than one that's already overwhelmed.
Earlier in the day:
• Take your dog on a relaxed sniff walk.
• Offer a lick mat or food puzzle.
• Play enrichment games.
• Spend quiet, connected time together.
• For cats, provide climbing opportunities, interactive play, and access to calming herbs if appropriate. We personally use Feline Essential Herb Gardens.
The goal isn't to wear them out.
It's to help them feel mentally satisfied and emotionally regulated before the evening begins.
This is where I begin layering in nutritional support.
Rather than relying on one product, I choose tools that work together to support the nervous system.
These are my top holistic supplement recommendations to support dog AND cat anxiety naturally while building long-term emotional and gut resilience. I love Standard Process products due to their research, quality and sourcing, and they use whole foods, glandulars and herbs to support the body at a nutritional level. The pet products can also be used between dogs and cats too, making them incredibly versatile.
